The Washington Green could be substantially impacted by several new developments. The library is presently expanding. The addition itself will not have a substantial visual impact on the green given the fact that it is to the rear of the library where there is a drop in elevation. The arrangement for parking, however, will have a negative impact because of its close proximity. The Gunnery is also going through changes that could affect the green including re-routing traffic through campus which is adjacent to the green. In addition, there has been a noticeable increase in the volume of traffic traveling Route 47, a state highway cutting through the green. It is expected that the traffic will continue to increase given development patterns in the area. These changes, individually and collectively, could promote development incompatible with the green that thus far has managed to adjust gracefully to changes. It should be noted that the green is located within a local historic district. However, this did not stop construction by the Gunnery of a gymnasium to the east of the green (also within the historic district) that is out of character with its historic neighbors in scale, material and design.
