Because of development along Main Street in the 19th century, the central focus of the town shifted from the green to Main Street. The lack of activity around the green meant the loss of many of the buildings that existed to support the public life of the community. The few historic residences around the green do not represent the green as it once was but they do allude to the historic importance of the site. Further losses would seriously reduce the integrity of the site.
