Winthrop Green

Surrounded by State Route 80 (Winthrop Green), State Route 145 (Cedar Lake Road), and the Mayer Road extension, this green is dominated by the Winthrop Baptist Church, which is located at the west end. The Greek Revival church, which was moved to the site in 1857-58, features a windowless front façade, centered doorway, and large pediment in the gable. A short tower extends upward from the roof peak. Pilasters on each side of the double doors support a transom.

An asphalt parking lot is to the west of the church. South of the parking lot, a flagpole is flanked by ornamental benches. East of the benches stand three large pine trees.

Adjacent to the church, on the east side, a gravel parking area can be entered from the Mayer Road extension.

A post and two-rail fence defines the perimeter of the green for most of its length. Concrete bench supports, minus the bench, stand at the far east end near the point of the triangle.

In addition to the pine trees, the green is planted with several varieties of trees and shrubs. Among them are mountain laurel and yew shrubs, and cherry, oak, and maple trees.

Facing the green is a mix of 19th-century and 20th-century residences. The house at 435 Winthrop Road is a one-story ranch (1956) on a large lot. At 24 Cedar Lake Road is a simple three-bay residence with a front roof pedimented gable and a small gable with returned eaves over the front door. This structure was built in 1840.

Overall, the church and tree have a quiet, dignified look and feel.
