Washington Town Green

The Washington Green is dramatically sited on a ridge and consists of about two acres of well maintained lawn at the center of a rural community. It is shaded primarily by mature maple and sycamore trees and crossed by two roads: Route 47, a state highway; and Parish Road, owned by the church and maintained by the town. The green extends north of Route 47 into the front lawns of the residences facing the highway. On the other side of the green, a concrete sidewalk marks the southern boundary. A connecting concrete walk cuts across the southwest corner of the green following the natural circulation pattern from the Gunnery School to the general store and post office. To the north of the Parish House is a small asphalt parking area connected to Parish Road. A cut stone pathway provides access to the Parish House and forms a circle around a large wooden play structure for children in front of the Parish House on the green.

It is surrounded primarily by 18th and 19th century buildings that are painted white providing the green with a cohesive and somewhat dramatic setting. The buildings include several fine homes; a post office and general store; the library (a field stone structure); the local history museum; and buildings associated with the Gunnery. St. John's Episcopal Church (1918) and Rectory are located not too far away from the northwest corner.

The Congregational Church stands near the center facing south toward Parish Road and away from Route 47. Winding cut stone paths cross the green to provide access to the church entrance from Kirby Road near the general store and from Wykeham Road near the museum. There are no memorials on the green. A memorial park/green has been established front of the new town hall in Washington Depot.

The "Green Fair" is held in July, a fundraising activity to pay for maintenance of the green. The proximity of the green to the community services and institutions makes the Washington Green an active place.
