Village Green

The Norfolk Green, located within the Norfolk National Register District, is a long, triangular park-like area measuring about 500 feet in the north-south direction. It is surrounded by well-kept homes and institutions, some designed by notable architects.

The major north-south (Route 272) and east-west (Route 44) routes through Norfolk intersect at the northwest corner of the green. On this corner is a replica of the 19th century wooded sign originally located at this site giving directions and mileage to nearby towns.

Facing Route 44 across from the library is a bronze tablet incised with the names of Norfolk men and women who served in World War Two. The tablet is mounted on stone and stands in front of a flagpole. In the north central part of the green an obelisk commemorates Norfolk men who served in the Civil War. It was designed by William A. Burdick and constructed of granite from Rhode Island.

A crushed stone walkway with granite borders crosses the green from east to west near the obelisk and just crosses from the Congregational Church on the west of the green. Two other crushed stone walkways without borders cross it at intervals south of this one. The middle walkway forms a circle at the center of the green, the circle surrounding a millstone laid on its side and recessed to ground level. Two semicircular benches face each other to the north and south of the millstone.

The third and southernmost crushed stone walkway is just north of a pink granite fountain designed by Stanford White in 1889 and dedicated to Joseph Battell. A nearby marble bench is part of the original fountain composition. The two tall free-standing bronze lamps were added later. A sundial flanked by shrubs is mounted on a concrete pedestal and stands near the center-point of the walkway. According to the original program, some of the sculpture on the fountain was executed by St. Gaudens. The Connecticut Historical Commission sign is situated on the west side of the green near Route 727.
