Veterans Green

Veterans Green is located at the northwest corner of North Main Street and Farmington Avenue, West Hartford's Civic Center. Directly to the south is Goodman Green, site of the original military parade ground. It consists of a long triangular grassy open space in the center of South Main Street.

Diagonally across the street from Veterans Green is the First Church of Christ, Congregational (1943), the fifth Congregational church serving the West Hartford parish and the fifth church located at the intersection. North of the green is the first public library building (1917) in West Hartford now used as offices. Further north, to the east and south are commercial buildings, dating primarily from the 20th century. The exception is the Victorian commercial block to the north.

The green itself was heavily landscaped in the 1960s so there is a sense of designed precision rather than a sense of having evolved over time like a regular green. To that extent, it complements the 20th century streetscape, but as a park rather than a green.

A long curve of clipped yew hedges almost forming a circle define the open space. In front of it is a wide circular sidewalk that merges with a sidewalk at the corner of North Main Street and Farmington Avenue. The focal point is a monument to the veterans of all the wars located on a raised platform near the northwest corner; hence its name, Veterans Green.

A well-kept lawn shaded by a few trees is in the center of the circle created by the sidewalk. Between the sidewalk and the yew hedges are six benches, symmetrically arranged on either side of the war memorial. The park is used for rest breaks, lunch breaks, band concerts and a town fair held in June. As presently landscaped, its focus is inward upon a War Memorial and as such, it no longer relates to its surroundings but is a separate entity unto itself.
