The Green
|
|
This open rectangular green, approximately one acre in size, is located off Woodbury Road (Route 6) near the center of Watertown. It is bounded on the east by a street called "The Green," along which are the buildings of the green's owners, the Romanesque Revival Christ Episcopal Church, its rectory and a Greek Revival former Academy, which was the focus of a recent controversy. It is an informal green with no curbing, its edging defined by maples and ash trees. There are streetlamps along the sidewalks of the street called The Green, but only a single utility pole and some no parking signs intrude on the green's openness. Private fences face the green's west edge and one house, a Federal Revival style, faces the green itself. The buildings that surround the green are high-style examples of several styles, including an Italianate stone house on the corner of Woodbury Road, which is surrounded by cast-iron fencing that wraps around the corner on the east side of the street called The Green.
