Rams Pasture

Ram Pasture is a long, broad, low-lying meadow situated between South Main Street on the east and Elm Drive on the west. Sugar Street and Hawley Road provide the north and south boundaries. A brook runs through the center of the pasture terminating in a pond at the south end and dam at Hawley Road. Mature deciduous trees line Elm Drive and South Main Street. They are situated just inside an old stone fence along South Main Street and one that lines the northern part of Elm Drive. A few willow trees grow near the brook and rushes surround a portion of the pond. Numerous well-tended shrubs have been planted along Hawley Road and near the south end of the pond. This landscaped area is in sharp contrast to the rest of the pasture that remains relatively unimproved. Two houses, one constructed c. 1770 and substantially altered and the other built c. 1920 are located in the southeast corner of the pasture near South Main Street.

The pasture is located within a residential neighborhood that developed in the 19th and 20th centuries, substantially later than the use of the open space as a pasture. Visually, the houses have little impact on it. Because the green is so large, it stands alone as an open space between two roads.
