Norwalk Green
|
|
The green is an elongated triangle (approximately 750 feet long) bounded by Park Street on the west, East Avenue on the west and St. Paul's Place on the north. It is located within a National Register Historic District. Mature trees, primarily maple, are planted along East Avenue and Park Place. In the interior, particularly at the southern end, several different species of deciduous trees are randomly planted including oak, dogwood, crabapple and locust. In the center is a spruce tree surrounded by a circular path. From it radiates a path to the east, west and north. Also to the north is a diagonal path crossing the green from the southwest corner to the center of Park Street. Northwest of the spruce tree is a bandstand, a bicentennial replacement for an earlier structure (1901). Near the southern end is a flagpole and a World War I memorial. The large granite block with the names of the war dead on a bronze plaque formerly supported a cannon. At the southern tip is a bed of flowers, and benches and waste receptacles are located throughout. The green retains the appearance of the 19th century largely due to the presence of the two churches and the character of the green which appears much as it did at the turn of the century. Although houses of moderate size face the green on Park Street as they did in the 19th century, the district is zoned for restricted commercial use. As a result, only a few houses in the immediate vicinity are still used as single-family houses. Several three-story modern office buildings have been built, particularly along East Avenue.
