Newington Center Green

The 0.72 acre Newington Center Green, roughly rectangular in shape, is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Main and Cedar Streets, which is the town center. The green is bounded by Cedar Street (south), Main Street (west), Ellsworth Street (north) and residential properties on the east. To the north of the green the area is primarily residential, while to the south is the town's traditional center commercial area. Diagonally across the intersection of Cedar and Main Streets is the Church of Christ, Congregational and the Center Cemetery, one of the oldest in town.

The green is nearly flat and well maintained. During the 1970s the park was improved with new flowering trees and shrubs, lighting, and walkways. The trees on the green, which include some old maples, generally form two rows running north/south. A paved walk runs along the Main Street border south from Ellsworth Street and half the distance to Cedar Street, at which point it turns 90 degrees and extends eastward and then curves and runs south along the eastern edge of the green. The town historical marker (prepared by the Connecticut Historical Commission) is at the curve. Near the end of the walk, at Cedar Street, is a granite boulder with bronze plaque (dated March 29, 1929) honoring World War I veterans and a town flagpole. Flower beds along the walkway are planted yearly.
