Naugatuck Green

|
The Naugatuck Green (or Church Street Green) is about a one acre rectangle. The largest portion is owned by the Borough of Naugatuck. However, there are two smaller parcels leased to it, one by the Congregational Church and one by St. Michaels Episcopal Church. The green is bounded by Meadow Street on the west, Division Street on the north and Church Street on the east. St. Michaels is adjacent to the green on the south. Situated on a narrow plateau, the ground rises sharply to the west of the green and falls to the east. Maple Street, a four-lane state highway from the east, terminates at Church Street at the foot of the green. Visually it appears to extend into the green because a concrete pad of about the same width on the other side of Church Street extends into the green. The focal point of the green, a Civil War Memorial on a tall base, is situated near the center of the green on the western edge of the pad. Behind it (to the west) is a grey stone classical public fountain designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White as part of their overall landscaping plan for the green in 1994. This design includes the wide concrete pad and the curvilinear paths on either side that lead diagonally across the green to northwest and southwest corners, the fountain, and the granite curbs and the bollards. All of these are extant. Later additions include a bandstand on a linear axis with the memorial near Meadow Street, and a granite shaft with a smaller rectangular stone on either side commemorating those who fought in World Wars One and Two and Vietnam. This is situated near the northeast corner. Mature trees are located mainly around the edges and along the paths.
