Memorial Green

Memorial Green is a long and narrow (325 feet at its longest point; 75 feet at its widest point) greensward situated within the National Register Historic District. It is bounded by West Street on the south, South Park Place on the north, and Main Street on the east. Each is a two way street. The buildings around it are a mix of commercial, residential and institutional. The Baptist Church (1853), now the Legion Hall, is located across from the green on the northwest corner. It has been substantially altered and faces Main Street rather than the green, so its presence is not as great as it otherwise might be. The tower on the Academy (1834) across Main Street is missing so it too tends to be less dominant. On the southwest corner is the Town Hall (1948), a large red brick building in the Colonial Revival style now used as a police station. All the distinguished 19th-century residences along Main Street across from the green are brick. Those along South Park Place toward the western end of the green are more modest frame homes covered with vinyl siding. On the same side of the green is a large, red brick apartment house (c. 1980) that is set back further from the street than the other buildings to allow parking in front. With the exception of this building and the gap in the streetscape on West Street, the buildings provide a rather cohesive streetscape because of their moderate scale and the predominance of brick. In addition, the mix of building types and styles provides the intersection with an element of liveliness. The green is the focal point of the town center and provides a welcomed open space at a busy intersection. It slopes gently to the southwest and mature shade trees including red oak, sugar maple and Norway maple provide shade along South Park Place and West Street. A World War One memorial at the center provides the focal point for the triangular greensward. It consists of a large boulder surmounted by a bronze eagle and a soldier's helmet and is flanked by two yew trees. The green is diagonally crossed by a concrete path near the western tip and surrounded by concrete curbs.
