Libby Kellogg Green
|
|
Small triangular green at the intersection of two major streets, one of two nearly adjacent public spaces in downtown Bethel. It is 45' x 90', with new concrete curbing. It has a flowering dogwood tree and a small granite marker recently placed and dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Kellogg, a longtime volunteer in Bethel who chaired the town's Conservation Commission for many years and is largely responsible for the establishment and success of a recycling center in Danbury, and who was instrumental in the fight to save this green in the mid-1980s. A bronze plaque on the stone bears a relief of her, with the inscription "Elizabeth A. Kellogg - A Woman Dedicated to the Preservation and Enhancement of Our Past, Our Present and Our Future." The marker faces east and in front of it are plantings. There are numerous traffic signs on the green's corners, including a stop sign, street sign, and other directional signs. The only other object is a fireplug. The green is located at the intersection of four major streets. Its surroundings are mixed, and include to the east Greek Revival single-family homes along with a contextually designed moderate-income housing project; to the south and west a part of the largely early-20th-century vintage commercial area surrounding P.T. Barnum Square. To the west is School Street, with a Colonial-style office building on the north corner and open land owned by the town as part of its municipal complex.
