East Litchfield Green

The green is triangular, formed by the confluence of two through roads, north-south East Litchfield Road and east-west Fern Road, and Collins Road, which runs diagonally between them to form the west side of the green, the hypotenuse of its triangle. The green has no curbing or any formal landscaping. It is simply meadow vegetation, occasionally mowed. There are large old maples at two points along roadsides, and some smaller maples, a locust, and other small trees. A tree planted several years ago as a beautification project is in poor condition. A telephone pole stands in the northwest corner. Although only about a hundred or so feet from State Route 118, a moderately traveled route between Litchfield and Thomaston, the green is in a completely rural area. In the middle of Collins Road facing the green stands the Isaac Phelps House, a center-chimney, two-story clapboard homestead with a second-story overhang that dates to 1723. Other older houses at the intersection are screened from the street by trees.
