Danbury Green
|
|
This recently created, one-acre green is located in "Parcel A" of the Danbury Redevelopment project. It covers the site of a former municipal parking lot, and is completely covered by new grass except for a walkway paved with alternating red and gray concrete pavers in a diamond pattern and similarly paved open plazalike spaces at the northeast corner and in the middle of its south side. It is bisected by a similarly paved walk about a third of the way from its eastern boundary on National Place. It is ringed by sidewalks, with limited street parking adjacent to its east side. The big grassy expanse is bordered by cast-iron Victorian-style lampposts, several spots with benches of plantation-grown teak, and new tree plantings. An underground sprinkler system keeps the grass green. The plaza at the northeast corner is the largest formal space, with a flagpole and an aggregate marker with a brass plaque dedicating the "Danbury Green" to the citizens of Danbury in September 1992. The green is surrounded by a blend of old and new buildings: the newly completed red-brick Patriot garage, Postmodern in style, overlooks it to the east, while the 1891 yellow-brick Romanesque Revival former Omaha Beef warehouse and a darker brick, contextually designed brick office building of the mid-1980s by developer Joseph Heyman, adjacent to the Omaha Beef building, abut the green to the north. Other late-19th-century brick buildings face it on Ives Street to the west, while a c. 1920s tire dealership and a 1955 diner face it on the south, across Delay Street.
