Coventry Green

The Coventry Green, located within a National Register Historic District, is a triangular-shaped parcel bounded by High, Lake and Cross Streets. It is dramatically located on a plateau looking across Lake Street to the Wangumbaug Lake beyond. The green slopes gradually up from the southeast to the northwest until about the center of the green where the Revolutionary War memorial is located, where it suddenly falls off to the tip. Many mature deciduous trees and a few coniferous trees are planted in a seemingly random fashion throughout the green. The focal point is the Revolutionary War Memorial (1930), a very large boulder with a bronze plaque, near the center on the highest point. To the southeast is a cannon presented to Coventry by the U.S. government during the Coolidge administration. Near the intersection of Lake and High Streets is another memorial, a large rough stone dedicated to those who served in World War II. Not far from it is a flagpole. The green is surrounded primarily by 18th century residences but these are spaced far apart and interspersed with wooded fields occasionally bounded by old stone fences which imbue the immediate area with a semi-rural character.
