Canton Green

The Canton Village Green is a small, flat, triangular green situated at what once was the village center. It is located at the intersection of Route 44, a busy, four-lane highway, and Dowd Avenue. To the west is a connector road that separates the green from the schoolhouse and an 18th-century house (badly altered) across from the green. Strip development along Route 44 has destroyed the historic character of the Village except here at the green, even though intrusions exist on the north side of Route 44 where the Baptist Church was relocated from the green. The south side of the green remains relatively intact with modest 19th-century dwellings along Dowd Avenue. Shade trees including maple, oak, ash and cherry are scattered around the green but closer to Route 44 and Dowd Avenue so the center remains bare. A concrete walkway winds from the northwest corner to the eastern tip where the town sign if located. A gazebo stands on the west side of the green, a flagpole further east, and near the tip are two benches.
