Broad Street Green

The Broad Street Green, located within a National Register and local historic district, is a long green that stretches about one-half mile and tapers at either end. It is oriented on a north-south axis and bounded by Broad Street on either side designated as Broad Street #1 (west side) and #2 (east side) and divided into three parts by two intersecting roads. It is smoothly graded and slopes gently to the south. Mature shade trees (mostly various types of maples, American sycamore; buckeye, pin oak, scarlet oak, honey locust and copper beach) and younger replacement trees are unevenly planted around the exterior. Near the southern end are some shrub groupings. A narrow asphalt path meanders almost the full length. At either end of the green is a memorial. The one on the south end, a six foot granite post surmounted with a lamp post (1908); was erected by the Foote Family Association in America to honor Nathaniel Foote, a Wethersfield settler. At the opposite end is a bounder with a bronze plaque dedicated to the 10 men from Massachusetts who initially settled Wethersfield.

Broad Street Green is surrounded by residential buildings that date primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries. They are of similar scale and material, generally intact and evenly set back from the street. They help define the open space by comfortably enclosing it.
